Ha! Funny you should ask...
I actually just finished this book:
And I found it absolutely enthralling. And it changed my whole perspective on self-esteem.
The premise of the book is that self-esteem is the world's counterfeit for confidence in God. The problem with self-esteem, it says, is that it is focused on the self. And, it constantly needs to be fed by other people, otherwise we feel like we don't have it and then we feel worse about ourselves. It's really just one giant, insatiable me-monster.
What I liked most about this book is that its focus was on love. I wish I had it in front of me so I could give you quotes, etc., but alas, I do not. Basically, Rasband says that if we take the focus OFF of ourselves and work on two things: Loving God and Loving our neighbor, we will receive a peace in our lives that gives us a natural confidence in God because we know that our hearts are in the right place, we feel closer to the spirit, and we're not so concerned with ourselves anymore.
I'm probably not doing this justice, but let me say that I recommend this book to EVERYONE. I've been learning a lot about LOVE and GOD'S LOVE in my daily study and in firesides/talks, etc. and it has changed my life. I am a different person with a completely different perspective on life and what's really important and you know what? I feel SO HAPPY all the time and I really do feel peace in pretty much every aspect of my life. There is no greater feeling. And I'm still learning - definitely haven't mastered it yet, but I've loved every minute of it and wish I could tell everyone in the world to do the same!
