8 Things Having a "Grown-up" Job Has Taught Me

1.    I will never be a hand model. You’re probably thinking, “What? No! It can’t be!” But, alas, it is true. I have now sustained enough paper cuts and other various hand injuries that hand-modeling is a dream I will never fulfill. Really though, I currently have FOUR paper cuts on my hands. And that’s nothing compared to a few weeks ago. I’ve never been much of a clumsy person, but apparently when my hands are around various paper products all day long, they can’t help but get a little too involved.
2.    Time is relative. If I leave my apartment 20 minutes before I have to be at work, I will arrive 5 minutes early. If I choose to use that extra 5 minutes to my advantage and take a little extra time getting ready, or have an extra 5 minutes in the shower, etc., and leave 15 minutes before I have to be at work, I will arrive 5 minutes late. I don’t know how that computes, but I think it has something to do with the 2-minute window between leaving my apartment and hitting Provo morning traffic. If I leave at 7:40, traffic is just fine. If I leave at 7:42, traffic is nuts. Gotta love that logic.
3.    Why my parents never want to do anything but eat dinner and watch TV for the rest of the night once they get home from work. It’s because working all day is exhausting! No matter what you do. I even get plenty of sleep and I still feel dead when I get home every day. The last thing I want to do is go out, hang out, work out or any other type of “out” you can think of. Actually, a make out wouldn’t be so bad, but let’s just be realistic. The point is, I’m pooped, and I get it.
4.    That “nicer” (meaning more expensive, “quality”) work clothes aren’t worth the money. I bought a couple pairs of nice work pants thinking they would be a good investment. I was wrong. They don’t even look that great on me. I have a pair of 17-dollar dress pants I bought at Charlotte Russe or Papaya (or another store of that nature) and they are the pants I feel the best in. The “nice” ones I bought are uncomfortable, unflattering, (though they seemed fine when I bought them – don’t know what happened…?) or got ruined and ended up being a waste. (I may or may not have had an unfortunate accident with an English muffin on the way to work one morning). Point being – not a good investment on my part.
5.    In the real world, you have to swallow your pride and start as the lowest of low in order to get anywhere good.
6.    Makeup only makes you look good for up to 4 hours. No more. After that, it’s all down hill for the rest of the day and people walk by your desk thinking to themselves, “Huh. What happened to her face?”
7.    It is a bad idea to keep snacks/food at your desk. I have 5 extra pounds of fat and a next-to-empty 1-lb bag of chocolate covered pretzels to prove it.
8.    That I’m ready to leave Utah. Or at least Provo. I’m just about done with living in a student ward and the Provo environment in general. I’ve tolerated it, made excuses, and tried to make myself happy with the situation I was given, but I am now over it. Time for Raechel to move on I think.

RE: 8. Where would you go? I am sick of Provo too but I think I am going to come back here after my mission until I decide where to go next.

Yeah, I'm very done too. Moving to SLC in August (unless I get a job out of state), and I think I'll probably go to the U's institute. It should be a pleasant change of scenery.

1. Don't forget about the nice curling iron burn on your hand too...that didn't help preserve your hand for future hand modeling.

8. AMEN! I've been saying this for the past few years. Though Provo has grown on me in ways over the years (and I enjoy my life here), I'm ready for the next step in life.

So True!! All but one pair of my dress pants are from Papaya. They look better than any at Nortstrom or Banana and were so cheep. Have you noticed the potent smell of B.O. in the store, however? It's always there - lingering by the dressing rooms.

1. I don't think i've ever gotten a paper cut at work...
2. Yes, this is the phenomenon I'm having difficulty with. I've never had difficulty with it before, but its plaguing and haunting me now.
3. Agreed.
4. Here in support we don't necessarily need nice clothes, but I'd like them. My interview suit was from shopko.. and those clothes are still definitely on sale.
6. Yes, that's true. How do you fix that. Do you bring touch up? or wear less?
7. Why not? You make friends that way... just tell people to come eat and they'll be your friend forever! at least, until your food runs out.
8. I grew up in orem and provo. I think being in an area with 2 colleges makes it difficult to get better jobs.
